Gold diadem, Mycenae, 1600 BC
This gold wreath with simulated leaves is made of paper-thin gold, demonstrating the extraordinary ductility of gold which ancient craftsmen understood and exploited to their advantage. The fragility of construction with no reinforcement at stress points, and the lack of wear marks (particularly around the holes intended for lacing) suggest that this was a funerary wreath. Mycenae, 1400-1200 BC.
