This ingenious Etruscan handle system for a large dish, caldron, or basin provided sturdy carrying handles that would collapse out of the way when the vessel was set out for serving.
The type of head-dress and the facial appearance of the women pictured on the medallions date the work to 680-640 BC (Bianchi Bandinelli 1973:Plate 160). A similar handle system is shown in Marcadé (1973:Plate 30).
