Red figure skyphos, Athens, 470-430 BC
This dark skyphos (a deep wine cup on a low foot) presents a black on black palm and sea creature motif. To provide an interesting contrast, the artist left the lower part of the cup unglazed. Athens, Greece 575 - 550 BC .

To address the challenge of competition by Corinthian potters, Athenian craftsmen focused on a different set of motifs: palms, ornamental striping, and wild animals, which they interspersed with Athenian elements. Since Solon’s laws facilitated the immigration of foreigners, Corinthian artists set up shop in Athens, which became a hotbed of commerce.
